I Wanted to Jump Out of the Window: When I Step into the Corridor, They Say I Shouldn't Go Out, Says Mother of Child Infected with HIV

The mother of a child infected with HIV is in a state of severe psychological distress. This was stated by Anna Avetisyan, a social worker from the public organization "Real World. Real People," in a conversation with Aravot.am. She recently visited the child and the mother, who are still at the Arabkir Medical Center.

Avetisyan mentioned that she had obtained permission in advance to visit the child. They found the child's hospital room marked with a note on the door that read, "The patient is isolated. Please do not enter the hospital room without a mask and appropriate attire." Avetisyan expressed that the hospital is exhibiting discriminatory behavior with such a notice.

The social worker approached the doctors and the Ministry of Health requesting the removal of the sign on the door. While it was taken down, another message was posted: "Please do not open the hospital room door, do not disturb the patient." Avetisyan recounted that the child's mother is already experiencing severe psychological trauma, and parents from other rooms in the department are putting pressure on her, saying, "When I step into the corridor, the nurses and doctors say that other mothers are saying I shouldn't go out into the corridor." The doctors have explained that the mother is not infected and her child does not pose a risk, but still...

Anna Avetisyan also shared the worries of the small child's mother. "The doctors have said it might not even be HIV, but something else. They are making such assumptions, which further add to the mother's distress. The mother also recounted that when the child was in critical condition, the doctors said he only had two days to live, and she stated, 'I wanted to jump out of the window.'"
