Turkey Outraged by Greek President's Statement on Genocide
The spokesperson for the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Hami Aksoy, has responded to Greek President Prokopios Pavlopoulos's statement regarding the Armenian Genocide, which was made during his visit to Armenia. This was reported by Ermenihaber.
"We see that Greece continues to remain within a hostile framework against Turkey and supports the viewpoints and positions that speak out against our country," Aksoy noted.
He also raised a series of unfounded claims regarding "atrocities committed by Greeks against Turks and other Ottoman citizens," and pointed out that Athens is still exerting pressure on the Turkish minority living in Greece. "Once again, we remind that support for activities directed against our country will never be beneficial for Greece," he added.
Commenting on the issue of Genocide, the Turkish official stated, "Turkey's position on the events of 1915 was expressed during President Erdoğan's tenure as Prime Minister in a statement released on April 23, 2014. No further explanation is needed."
The Greek President Prokopios Pavlopoulos, who visited Armenia on an official trip, sent a message to Turkey from Armenia. During a joint press statement with Armenian President Armen Sarkissian, he addressed the Armenian Genocide and the genocide of Pontic Greeks, stating that Turkey must reconcile with its history and take responsibility.
