Turkey Must Come to Terms with Its History, Answer and Apologize, Says Greek President
The President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopios Pavlopoulos, who is on an official visit to Armenia, sent a message to Turkey from Yerevan. During a joint press conference with Armenian President Armen Sarkissian, the Greek president addressed the Armenian Genocide and the genocide of the Pontic Greeks, stating that Turkey must come to terms with its history and take responsibility.
“We remember the genocide of the Armenians, we remember the genocide of the Pontic Greeks. We are pleased that just days ago, the U.S. House of Representatives expanded the recognition of genocide. We recognized the Armenian Genocide at the parliamentary level in 1996, established April 24 as the day of the Armenian Genocide, and in 2014 criminalized the denial of the Armenian Genocide. I want to thank you for the unanimous recognition of the genocide of the Pontic Greeks by the National Assembly of Armenia. From here, we want to send a message to Turkey: it must reconcile with its history, answer and apologize,” said the president.
