Motion Submitted to Release Kocharian on Bail

The defense attorneys of Armenia's second president, Robert Kocharian, have submitted a motion to change his pre-trial detention measure. This was announced by his attorney, Aram Vardevanyan, during the latest court session regarding the criminal case against Kocharian at the General Jurisdiction Court in Yerevan.

“Kocharian has been in detention for five months. I would like to know if there is any factual evidence that he has tried to obstruct the pre-trial investigation. We are requesting a change in Kocharian's pre-trial detention measure to bail,” he stated.

Vardevanyan noted that the amount for bail will be left to the discretion of the court.

On July 26, 2018, in the criminal case regarding March 1, charges were brought against the second president of Armenia, Robert Kocharian, under part 1 of Article 300.1 of the Criminal Code of Armenia, for allegedly colluding with others to overturn the constitutional order of the Republic of Armenia.

It is noteworthy that on September 20, the General Jurisdiction Court of Yerevan had rejected a similar motion to release Kocharian on bail, which had been filed by attorney Hovhannes Khudoyan.
