Recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the US is a step in the right direction, Adam Schiff

The recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the United States is a step in the right direction, believes US Congressman Adam Schiff, who co-authored House Resolution 296 on recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide, reports Voice of America.

This is the result of a united bipartisan effort from legislators across Congress, the Democratic congressman points out, highlighting the participation of his Republican colleagues.

"I believe the United States also has a very important moral obligation to speak plainly and honestly about the deliberate extermination of one and a half million Armenians from 1915-1923," he stated.

The resolution, scheduled for a vote in the House of Representatives on Tuesday evening, also includes provisions for disseminating information about the Armenian Genocide in all public schools across the U.S.

The Turkish Embassy in the US has issued a statement opposing the resolution, arguing that "the claims regarding the events of 1915 are not based on legal or historical facts." However, Congressman Adam Schiff doubts that the Turkish side's arguments will be heard by the majority in Congress this time.

"I think members of Congress are fed up with Turkey's behavior, actions that are contrary to US interests. So, if in the past some members of Congress considered the Turkish government's position, which was a misstep considering the moral weight of recognizing the Armenian Genocide, tomorrow Turkish lobbying will find little support in Congress," he added.

Commenting on the current cooperation between the United States and Armenia, Adam Schiff emphasized that the developments since Armenia's "Velvet Revolution" are opening brilliant opportunities for the development of Armenian-American cooperation.

"I am very impressed with the Prime Minister. I know that there are very encouraging times for both the citizens of Armenia and the Armenian community in the United States, and I see that optimism regarding the new government. I highly appreciate the Prime Minister’s efforts, who has brought in a team of technocrats and is trying to overcome all the issues facing Armenia, including corruption," he noted.
