Urgent: Ara Babloyan Charged

The former Speaker of the National Assembly, Ara Babloyan, was charged today, October 28. His preventive measure has been set as a signature not to leave the country.

Earlier, it was reported that Babloyan had been summoned by the Special Investigative Service (SIS).

It should be noted that based on sufficient evidence obtained during the preliminary investigation of the criminal case being examined by the SIS, Arsen Babayan was charged yesterday under Article 38-300, Part 1, and Article 314, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia. Ara Babloyan, the former Speaker of the National Assembly, has been involved as a suspect in this same criminal case on suspicion of seizing power.

According to the SIS's announcement, Arsen Babayan created conditions to seize the powers of the Constitutional Court by publishing the statement of Ara Babloyan, who signed the resignation request of Constitutional Court President Gagik Harutyunyan on March 2, 2018, which in turn served as the basis for terminating his powers. Subsequently, this initiated the process of nominating and appointing Hrayr Tovmasyan to that vacant position.
