No More Dirtiness: Deputy Mayor Announces Solutions for Underground Passages
The capital renovation of several underground passages in Yerevan will begin in 2020. This announcement was made today by Yerevan Deputy Mayor Hayk Sargsyan in response to a question from Prosperous Armenia MP Sergey Bagratyan regarding the city's underground passages.
Bagratyan accused the city authorities of allowing several underground passages to become dirty, and noted that some even lack lighting. In response, the Deputy Mayor acknowledged that the underground passage at the beginning of Mashtots Avenue, at the intersection of Grigor Lusavorich and Paronyan streets, is particularly in poor condition.
“There is moisture accumulating here that is dripping from the ceiling. Therefore, renovation is necessary. Without it, everything will become damp again. That is why no one agrees to open shops here,” Sargsyan added.
The city hall is currently providing temporary lighting in the passages to avoid darkness. A contractor tender for the renovations will be announced next year.
It is worth noting that almost all underground passages in Yerevan are filled with shops or other stalls, further narrowing the passages. The aforementioned passage, which has not yet been renovated, is a “popular place” for members of the LGBTQ community.
