Any Discriminatory Approach Towards Media is an Assault on Freedom of Speech: Journalists' Union

The Armenian Journalists' Association (AJA) strongly condemns any manifestation of assault on freedom of speech. Any discriminatory approach towards media and any actions that limit a journalist's professional activities are considered an assault on freedom of speech, especially when such discrimination is exhibited by a civic organization that presents itself as a protector of democratic principles and human rights.

AJA is confident that the current atmosphere will not lead to anything good; it will only deepen distrust and existing problems. Everyone, including organizations, is responsible for their work within the framework of their perceptions of integrity and professional ethics. In all other cases, any disputes in Armenia are resolved through judicial means.

We urge everyone to maintain the boundaries of correctness and tolerance in their relations with the media and journalists, to demonstrate appropriate politeness, and to comply with the requirements of the "Law on Mass Media," which states that discrimination against media should be excluded, and any manifestation of discrimination should be rejected.

We call on media outlets to diligently perform their work while adhering to the norms of professional ethics. In this context, we urge authorities to be consistent with the democratic values they have proclaimed, to respect the work of media and the freedom of speech in general.

Today, many media outlets face discrimination daily. They encounter problems in obtaining information as stipulated by law and verifying the information they possess in a timely manner. Serious challenges arise in inviting interviews and debates, especially from government circles.

In many other cases, several media outlets and particularly photo agencies face discriminatory treatment preventing them from covering events organized by various departments, while these photo agencies have obligations to their subscribers, including several major reputable international media outlets.

Once again, we call for respect towards partnership relations and to eliminate any manifestations of discriminatory treatment against media outlets.
