Proposal to Review Applications for Armenian Citizenship in 3 Months Instead of 6
The Ministry of Justice has proposed that applications for Armenian citizenship be reviewed within 3 months instead of the current 6 months for individuals of Armenian descent.
Additionally, it is suggested that individuals of Armenian descent be granted the right to obtain their first Armenian passport at diplomatic representations and consulates operating in foreign countries when acquiring Armenian citizenship.
This proposal has been presented by the Ministry of Justice on the unified website for the publication of legal acts. The Ministry has stated that there are currently over 20,000 presidential decrees granting Armenian citizenship pending at the Passport and Visa Department of the police. However, due to various circumstances (financial, personal, etc.), these individuals are unable to come to Armenia to obtain their passports, which are necessary to confirm their citizenship.
With this draft, the Ministry of Justice also proposes not to terminate a person's Armenian citizenship due to unpaid obligations, emphasizing that such actions would contradict the requirements of the Constitution.
