Gagik Khachatryan's Detention Extended

The former head of the State Revenue Committee and former Finance Minister Gagik Khachatryan's defense team reports outside the Shengavit department of the Yerevan General Jurisdiction Court that the court has made a decision regarding the National Security Service's request to extend Khachatryan's detention.

It should be recalled that the NSS had filed a motion to prolong the detention of former head of the State Revenue Committee Gagik Khachatryan. Yesterday, the court had gone into deliberation to decide on the NSS's motion.

Based on the factual data obtained from extensive operational-investigative activities and investigative actions carried out over a long period within the framework of a criminal case initiated on February 2, 2019, by the investigative department of the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia, searches were conducted on August 27, 2019, at the residences of Gagik Khachatryan, the former head of the State Revenue Committee and former Finance Minister, as well as several individuals connected with him.

On the same day, after the searches were completed, Gagik Khachatryan and Karen Khachatryan (a former high-ranking official of the State Revenue Committee) were apprehended and arrested on suspicion of committing offenses provided for in part 2 of Article 308 and part 1 of Article 179 of the RA Criminal Code (abuse of office involving serious consequences and embezzlement of particularly large amounts of property).
