Court Allows Ohanyan to Travel to Germany for Treatment

The defendant in the March 1 case, former defense minister Seyran Ohanyan's attorney Inessa Petrosyan requested today that the court allow her client to travel to Germany for treatment due to health issues for a period of two weeks.

The attorney presented the relevant invitation and its Armenian translation to Judge Anna Danibekyan, who presided over the session. "Mr. Ohanyan must be at the hospital on October 21 at 9:30 AM. This is related to his illness; you know there is a prosthetic issue. Mr. Ohanyan undergoes a mandatory examination every two years, which is why the medical center has invited him," the attorney stated, presenting the technical passport of the prosthetic.

Ohanyan's other lawyer, Karen Mejlumyan, noted that specialists examine the prosthetic and that there is a need to change certain details every two years. The other defendants and their attorneys did not object to the submitted request. “It is simply shameful that this issue is still being discussed,” remarked Kocharian.

The prosecution attorneys also did not present any substantial objections to Seyran Ohanyan traveling to Germany for treatment, but prosecutor Gevorg Baghdasaryan pointed out that the court should receive guarantees that Ohanyan would return.

“We suggest choosing another preventive measure so that both we and the court have guarantees that Seyran Ohanyan will return within the specified time,” the prosecutor noted.

Seyran Ohanyan himself remarked that doctors would work on resolving the issue for one to two weeks and that he would return to Armenia once they finished. “It generally takes 15 days for these works, but the sooner the better. I believe the concerns are unfounded. My assurances are over 100 percent that I will return. My family is staying here, and I will come back. Who should I turn to for guarantees? Let the court guarantee,” said Seyran Ohanyan.

After listening to both sides, Judge Danibekyan decided to grant the attorneys’ request and allowed Seyran Ohanyan to travel to Germany for treatment from October 18 to November 4. It should be noted that a preventive measure of not leaving was selected for Seyran Ohanyan, which meant that he could only travel outside of Armenia with the permission of the prosecuting body.
