If the mine operates, residents of Jermuk will sue the Republic of Armenia in international courts.

If Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirms that the Amulsar mine will be exploited, the residents of Jermuk are prepared to sue the Republic of Armenia in international courts. This was stated by one of the participants in the protests against the operation of the Amulsar mine during a conversation with Tert.am in Jermuk.

“In reality, the strike has only lasted one day so far. We are waiting for a response from the government. Most of the community's residents have gathered. We are not to blame for the fact that Jermuk is a small town and we cannot gather 10-15 thousand people. This is direct democracy; there is nothing to discuss here,” said one of the participants in the protests.

The resident emphasized that no one demands the closure of the Teghut and Qajaran mines, as those towns are specifically mining towns; however, Jermuk should ideally remain a spa resort. “I urge the Prime Minister once again to focus solely on this. We are not raising environmental issues because our environmentalist friends have already addressed those. We are raising the issue of the socio-economic direction of Jermuk. We want Jermuk to remain a spa, tourist, and mineral water production town,” he said.

According to the resident, the struggle has been ongoing for 1.5 years, but they have always fought peacefully and have shown no aggression. “I simply state that if the Prime Minister continues to say that the mine should operate, I will personally organize for the residents of Jermuk to sue the Republic of Armenia in international courts for violating their rights to live and work. We are being forced to live differently, and we do not want that,” he emphasized.
