VIDEO. Levon Kocharian on Court Decisions: The Constitutional Court Will Announce Its Decision on September 4
There are pressures being applied to the Constitutional Court and the judicial system. This was stated by Levon Kocharian, son of the second President of Armenia Robert Kocharian, during a conversation with journalists on September 3.
“After taking our case, when the appeals were accepted, and when the first instance judge Davit Grigoryan suspended the case and sent it to the Constitutional Court, you saw what pressures began on the CC. I mean starting from the head of state’s interview, from Vahe Grigoryan’s fake agenda as a CC judge, there were reports that attempts were being made to initiate cases against the CC members, digging into the past. When this starts happening after a specific event, it raises suspicions. If a person is in their favor, they forget everything; if their wishes may not be granted, they remember,” he emphasized.
When asked if he expects justice from Armenian courts, Levon Kocharian responded that “there have been judges who have had the courage to make decisions not pleasing to the authorities.” He added, “We all see these pressures; the other side of the question is who submits and who finds strength in themselves to act according to the law. There were judges who made decisions, fully aware that such rulings are not at all pleasing to the leadership.”
Regarding the pressures on the courts he noted, “Where in the world have you seen doors of courts being closed at the call of the country's first person?”
It should be noted that the Constitutional Court of Armenia is examining the request of the second President Robert Kocharian based on the provisions of Article 35 and Article 135, Part 2 of the Criminal Procedure Code regarding the constitutionality of the grounds for applying preventive measures against Robert Kocharian and the circumstances excluding the criminal proceedings or prosecution. The decision will be published on September 4.
