Opera Singer Placido Domingo at the Center of Controversy

Opera Singer Placido Domingo at the Center of Controversy

The world-renowned Spanish opera singer Placido Domingo has been accused by several women of past sexual misconduct. According to Shantnews.am, citing the Los Angeles Times, the administration of the Los Angeles Opera has initiated an urgent, multifaceted, and independent investigation into the singer's conduct.

This investigation has involved attorney Debra Wong Yang, who previously served as a federal prosecutor in the Central District of California. Notably, Domingo has been working at the Los Angeles Opera for 30 years.

The acting Minister of Culture of Spain, Jose Guirao, has also commented that the accusations against Domingo must be substantiated. He emphasized that only one woman has made a public statement, while the others have remained anonymous.

It is important to recall that earlier, several women (eight singers and one dancer) accused the 78-year-old opera singer Placido Domingo of sexual misconduct in the 1980s. Following this, the San Francisco Opera cancelled a concert featuring him, along with the Finland Symphony Orchestra. However, concerts in Moscow, at Milan's La Scala, London’s Covent Garden, and the Salzburg Festival were not cancelled.

Domingo has categorically denied all allegations. This wave of sexual misconduct accusations began two years ago after the scandal involving actor Kevin Spacey and producer Harvey Weinstein. Since then, the names of numerous stars and political figures have emerged in similar contexts. Large-scale campaigns against sexual violence, such as the Me Too and Time's Up movements, gained significant traction, extending to ordinary users on social media.
