Extraordinary General Assembly of Judges Fails Due to Lack of Quorum
Today, an extraordinary general assembly of judges was convened at the Ajapnyak premises of the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction, during which a judge member of the Supreme Judicial Council was to be elected. It is noteworthy that there are currently 234 judges operating in Armenia.
The general assembly is authorized to function only if more than half of the total number of judges participate. The election for the vacant position of a member of the Supreme Judicial Council was to take place among five judges: Suren Antonian, Mamikon Drmayan, Gor Hakobyan, Stepan Mikaelyan, and Tigran Petrosyan, all judges of the Civil and Administrative Chamber of the Court of Cassation.
The vacancy in the Supreme Judicial Council emerged after Judge Nakshun Tavaratsyan of the Court of Cassation resigned shortly after being elected as a member of the Supreme Judicial Council amid considerable controversy and only a few days in office. Currently, there is one judge and one academician position vacant in the Supreme Judicial Council.
A short while ago, it became known that the extraordinary general assembly of judges did not take place due to a lack of quorum, as only about 70 judges were present, making it impossible for the assembly to be deemed authorized.
