Trash Piles in Yerevan Transforming into Health-Damaging Risk Zones
The "Hayastani Hanrapetutyun" newspaper reports that Yerevan is not being cleaned from the stench due to improper waste collection. Lilith Gabrielian, a leading specialist at the Ministry of Health and Labor Inspection's Hygiene, Sanitary and Epidemiological Control Department, stated in an interview with the newspaper that there are health risks in these conditions.
“The accumulation of trash contributes to an increase in rodent populations. Rodents, in turn, are considered natural reservoirs for various diseases. In addition to rodents, flies also play a significant role in this regard. Accumulations of garbage create a natural environment that is fertile for various diseases, with flies facilitating their dissemination. For example, dysentery can be spread by flies. Additionally, there is an increased risk of transmission of diseases such as leishmaniasis and leptospirosis through rodents,” she noted.
