Fine of 150,000 AMD for Driving in the Opposite Lane: Prosperous Armenia Proposes Legislation
Members of the National Assembly from the 'Prosperous Armenia' faction, Vahe Enfiadjian and Naira Zohrabyan, today introduced amendments to the Law on Administrative Offenses. The parliamentarians propose to tighten penalties for certain traffic violations.
In particular, the draft legislation seeks to impose a fine of 150,000 AMD for drivers who enter the opposite lane. According to Enfiadjian, current fines of 30,000 AMD are insufficient to deter such behavior and do not contribute to a reduction in the number of violations.
“Significantly increasing the liability for entering the opposite lane will help substantially reduce and prevent one of the most dangerous and lethal violations,” stated the MP from Prosperous Armenia.
It is worth noting that recent tragic incidents resulting in fatalities from road traffic accidents have sparked a group of activists to call for criminalizing the violation of entering the opposite lane. However, the parliamentarians believe that such an initiative may be controversial.
