Theresa May Officially Leaves the Position of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Theresa May has officially left the position of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland following a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II. Sky News reports that May went for the meeting with the Queen immediately after her farewell speech. According to British tradition, the transfer of power occurs within a very short time frame, leaving the United Kingdom without a Prime Minister for about an hour.

Immediately after May, the newly elected Prime Minister Boris Johnson also met with the Queen. Queen Elizabeth II tasked him with forming a government, after which Johnson officially assumed the position of Prime Minister.
