Electricity Tariff to Decrease, Says Garegin Baghramyan

Construction of a new 250 MW power plant in Yerevan will enable a reduction in electricity tariffs by approximately 1-1.5 drams, according to Garegin Baghramyan, the chairman of the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC). He made the statement during the inauguration ceremony of the construction of the 250 MW power plant today, July 12.

Baghramyan explained that during peak demand periods when energy supply is insufficient, the Hrazdan thermal power plant is activated, producing electricity at a significantly higher cost. According to him, the fuel component of the tariff is currently set at 31.5 drams, which has already increased by one dram, and an additional 10 drams is allocated for expenses, bringing the tariff per kWh to around 40-41 drams.

He noted that the new power plant will be the most modern and its construction is expected to lead to a decrease in tariffs by 1-1.5 drams. “The Hrazdan thermal power plant is quite old, has a very low efficiency, and is already exhausting its resources, with only one or two years of operational capacity left. This new capacity will also serve to replace it,” he stated.
