14 Sailors Killed in Submarine Incident in Russia
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense's press service, a research submarine under the ministry's jurisdiction was involved in an accident yesterday, resulting in the deaths of 14 sailors. The incident occurred in Russian territorial waters.
The ministry reports that the sailors suffocated from smoke caused by a fire that broke out. The fire has since been extinguished, and the submarine has been transferred to the Severomorsk military port.
An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the tragic incident. The defense ministry has not disclosed how many people were on board the submarine or what caused the fire. The investigation is being led by the Chief Commander of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, who was appointed to this position by President Vladimir Putin on May 3 of this year.
