Resident of Armavir Beats Wife and Mutilates Her Face with a Knife

A 65-year-old resident of the Armavir region physically assaulted his 48-year-old wife during a domestic dispute, delivering punches, knocking her to the ground, and subsequently inflicting injuries to her face with a kitchen knife.

According to "Factinfo," the man has been charged under Article 112, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia, which pertains to intentionally causing serious bodily harm to another person, and he has been placed under a non-leaving signature as a preventive measure.

As per the judicial information system, the couple has been married since 1990, and their relationship was reportedly normal in the early years. However, things began to deteriorate after the husband moved to Russia in 2009. Upon returning from Russia in 2016, he continued to live in his parental home. The wife also resided in the same house, but after the husband’s return to Armenia, they verbally agreed to live separately and manage separate households. They have not officially divorced but have been living separately since 2016.

About a week before the incident, the husband had contacted the father of Susan Petrosyan, giving him a week to have his wife pack her belongings and leave, yet she did not depart.

On the day of the incident, October 8, 2018, the wife, after waking up, went to the room to change into clothes to care for the livestock. During this time, the husband approached the room door, opened it, and, after the wife turned around, punched her in the face with the intent to cause bodily harm. He then pulled her by the hair and threw her to the ground, delivering several punches to her face. Afterward, he picked up a kitchen knife from the floor and began to slash her face, resulting in severe bodily injury and permanent facial disfigurement.

It should be noted that the case was submitted to court in April of this year, and the accused has admitted to the charges brought against him, leading him to request an expedited trial process. During the expedited trial, the court recognized that the man committed a serious crime as outlined in Article 112, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia, for which he is to be held accountable.

Taking into account the nature of the crime and the degree of public danger, the court found that the punishment should be in the form of imprisonment. Therefore, the man has been sentenced to four years in prison and has been released from serving the sentence under the application of Article 2, Part 1, Clause 1 of the Armenian law related to the announcement of amnesty in connection with the 2800th anniversary of Erebuni-Yerevan and the 100th anniversary of the declaration of independence of the First Republic of Armenia, dated November 3, 2018.
