VIDEO: If that is the case, why are you on the shoulders of a child born from rape? Gevorg Petrosyan to Vahe Grigoryan

During a discussion about the appointment of Constitutional Court judge candidate Vahe Grigoryan, the lack of intense questioning from the 'My Step' faction was notable compared to previous candidates. Currently, deputies are delivering speeches, expressing their positions on the matter.

Within the Prosperous Armenia faction, deputies are free to vote according to their preferences regarding the election of the Constitutional Court judge. For Gevorg Petrosyan from the faction, it is incomprehensible why the candidate repeatedly states that the appointment of a Constitutional Court member is political.

“It seems you understand what a dangerous element your statement carries. You want to create transitional justice, and your whole aim is to ensure the independence of the courts. Against this backdrop, how do you envision the Constitutional Court being formed with a political component? A member of the Constitutional Court, be it you or anyone else, if elected for political motives, cannot serve the interests of political power,” Petrosyan stated.

The Prosperous Armenia deputy also referred to Grigoryan's claim that he met many representatives of power not at a feast, but rather in prisons, stating, “You say you got acquainted in prison, and one helped another. My brother, if someone helped you in prison, how can you forget those memories when you expect support from the same person?”

He noted that the previous two candidates for the Constitutional Court, whose candidacies were rejected by the parliamentary majority, perhaps had the flaw of not having formed friendships with the authorities in prison.

“You made a very unfortunate joke, dear Mr. Grigoryan. What does it mean that the current Constitution is like a child born from rape? I do not want to ask you now who the rapist was and who the victim was. If that’s the case, then why are you on the shoulders of a child born from rape and want to settle in the Constitutional Court this way?” Petrosyan challenged Grigoryan in the hall.

The deputy also recalled Grigoryan’s statement that the President of Armenia is illegitimate, posing another question: “If the president is illegitimate, why are you here, what are we doing here, are we just sitting here admiring ourselves? If you consider one subject as illegitimate, then in my opinion, it is immoral to be nominated by that subject and to overload the Constitutional Court’s list at any cost.”

It is noteworthy that MP Shake Isayan had previously posed a question to Constitutional Court member candidate Vahe Grigoryan about how he envisions his work under the current Constitution and how he feels about the establishment of the Constitution through a referendum. Grigoryan responded: “The Constitution we have, accepted through the 2015 referendum, has always evoked negative associations for us in terms of its acceptance. I apologize for my crude expression. It is like a child born from rape, we love him and so on, but we always remember its origins, and it must be acknowledged. This issue must be resolved and become a subject of serious discussions.”
