Mukuchyan Considers the Option of Setting a Unified Election Day for Local Self-Government Elections

The chairman of the Central Electoral Commission of Armenia, Tigran Mukuchyan, considers the option of establishing one or two unified days for local self-government elections annually. This was reported by Armenpress.

According to Mukuchyan, this would give local self-government elections a political nature. He expressed this opinion during a Q&A session with deputies after presenting the report on the implementation of the 2018 state budget in the permanent committees of the National Assembly.

“Previously, prior to the adoption of the Electoral Code in 2016, the regulations were such that it was difficult to remember two Sundays in a year when there would be local self-government elections somewhere. Later, to address that issue, a model was adopted where these days could be designated up to four times a year. It is possible to consider a mechanism that would increase the significance of local self-government elections as political elections. We could consider establishing a unified election day for local self-government elections once a year. If the term of the mayor expires before that, an interim institute could be planned. The possibility of having one or two days a year can be discussed,” said Mukuchyan.

In his opinion, this would also be highlighted by political forces.
