New Agreements Against Illegal Immigration Between Mexico and the US

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has announced on his Twitter page about a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump and the agreements reached. "I told him that I will show in Tijuana not a fist to the US President, but really an open hand," the president added.

Later during a rally in Tijuana, Obrador stated that Mexico has proposed solutions to overcome the migration crisis, which has largely contributed to the completion of discussions in Washington, according to CNN. He noted that the new tariffs, which Trump had threatened to impose on goods imported from Mexico to the US, would put the country in a "very complicated situation," and the country would have to take corresponding measures on US imports.

On May 6, Trump announced that the US was imposing a 5 percent tariff on all goods imported from Mexico and promised that these rates would increase as long as the flow of illegal immigrants from Mexico did not stop. The American leader explained that these measures were aimed not only at fighting illegal immigration but also at addressing drug trafficking.

However, on June 8, Trump announced that he had indefinitely postponed the decision on new tariffs as the US and Mexico reached a new agreement in the fight against illegal migration.
