Protest Against Agarak Copper-Molybdenum Plant

Protest Against Agarak Copper-Molybdenum Plant

Residents of the Karchavan community in the Syunik region are currently staging a protest in the village against the "Agarak Copper-Molybdenum Plant," reports Hetq.am.

According to Mariam Abrahamyan, a lawyer representing the residents' interests, the locals demand that the plant operates in compliance with environmental standards. The lawyer stated that the emissions produced during the plant's operation are damaging the villagers' gardens and spoiling their crops. Additionally, residents are complaining about the impact of the plant on their lives. The lawyer noted that they are forced to breathe in emitted dust and drink contaminated water.

"The residents simply want the plant to operate in accordance with legal requirements and not harm the environment," Mariam Abrahamyan said.

The lawyer also mentioned that residents of Karchavan have repeatedly contacted the "Agarak Copper-Molybdenum Plant" since 2012, demanding it to adhere to environmental standards and not damage their gardens, while seeking restitution for the harm caused. However, according to Mariam Abrahamyan, the plant responds that the residents must prove that its operations affect and harm the local gardens.
