Armenia Stands Firm: The Position of CSTO Secretary General to Be Handed to Belarus in 2020

The position of the CSTO Secretary General will be occupied by a representative from Belarus starting January 1, 2020. According to Rusarminfo, this was announced by the acting Secretary General of the CSTO, Valery Semerikov.

“On May 22, a decision will be made by the foreign ministers of the CSTO member states to inform the leaders of the CSTO member states about the appointment of the Belarusian representative as Secretary General starting January 1, 2020,” he said.

Since April 2017, the Secretary General position of the CSTO was held by Armenia's representative Yuri Khachaturov, who was recalled from this position in November 2018 due to criminal charges related to the events of March 1.

According to the organization's charter, the CSTO Secretary General is appointed for a term of three years, one from each member state, in alphabetical order. Since Khachaturov's recall from the position, Yerevan has insisted that a representative from another country, specifically Belarus, should not be appointed to this post.
