More than 8,000 trees pruned in Yerevan, municipality reports
The spring pruning that began on March 5 in the capital is currently underway. Given the favorable weather conditions, the process will continue until April 25, according to the press service of the Yerevan Municipality.
As of now, more than 8,000 trees have been pruned in Yerevan. To ensure that the process is carried out with a professional and regulated approach, specialists in the field presented the main requirements that should be applied during pruning to the employees of the greening enterprises in the administrative districts before the work commenced. According to Khachik Hakobyan, head of the municipality's environmental protection department, deep pruning has been carried out exclusively on sick trees and those of the species characterized by an age exceeding 60 years.
At the same time, rejuvenation or deep pruning has also been applied to black mulberries, which are very vulnerable during winds due to their shallow root systems and tall canopies.
Many trees, particularly the linden and mulberry trees on Mashtots Avenue and Kievyan Street, are sick, afflicted, and have completely decayed root systems, moreover, these trees have exhausted their lifespan. It is noteworthy that during the spring pruning, the vertical appearance of the trees is mainly preserved. It should also be mentioned that the trees subjected to deep pruning are treated and nourished with organic fertilizers—biohumus, and are abundantly watered, while new trees are planted in places from where dried trees have been removed.
“Our fellow citizens have no reason to be concerned. Every pruning operation is under professional supervision, and the future of each tree is important to us. Just 20 days ago, the linden trees on Paronyan Street were also subjected to deep pruning. They have already been covered with fresh buds, which indicates the effectiveness of the work,” said the head of the environmental protection department.
