North Avenue Shops Ordered to Change Black Signboards

According to the newspaper "Hraparak," the renowned architect of the classic expression regarding black and white, Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan, is known for his dislike of the color black. However, this aversion seems to have evolved into a focused idea.

Recently, one of the owners of brand shops and cafes located on North Avenue informed us that employees from the external advertising department of the Center community visited the avenue and demanded the removal of all signboards with black backgrounds. They instructed to choose new colors, like red or yellow.

When they explained that the lessees were subject to franchising (business relations between independent companies and individuals, where the franchise grants the right to use their brand style without making any point or punctuation changes in the design for a certain fee—royalty), the community continued to insist on their demands.

We visited North Avenue and spoke with managers and directors of shops including Emporio Armani, Massimo Dutti, Milano, "Burmunk" and others, and the "Burger" cafe. Only one directly mentioned that they indeed have advertising-related issues, while others indirectly confirmed the situation but refused to provide more details.
