UN Office in Armenia Issues Statement

UN Office in Armenia Issues Statement

The United Nations Office in Armenia is concerned about the recent increase in hate speech and threats of violence against human rights and LGBTQI activists. This is stated in the UN Armenia office's announcement.

It emphasizes that threats of non-violent actions, as well as any form of discrimination against any group or individual, cannot be tolerated.

The announcement also points out that the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia and its international legal obligations, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and other human rights conventions ratified by Armenia, prohibit discrimination. Therefore, the UN calls on the Armenian authorities to investigate and prosecute legally the instances of violations and abuses against members of the LGBTQI community to ensure the physical safety of targeted individuals and promote an environment free from hate speech that upholds human dignity.

It is also noted that the principles against discrimination and promoting tolerance encompass respect for the human rights of all people, including ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities. Armenia has made commendable commitments to promote these principles and has made progress in this area. The UN has expressed its willingness to support the people of Armenia in fulfilling these commitments for a better life for all.
