I Am Ready to Assume the Position of Opera Theater Director: Armen Sarksyan

If a competition is announced for the vacant position of director at the National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet named after Alexander Spendiaryan, I am ready to put forward my candidacy and assume that position, as I am aware of the issues facing the Opera Theater and have friendly relations with nearly the entire staff.

This was stated by Armen Sarksyan, a member of the Yerevan City Council from the 'My Step' faction, during a Facebook press conference. Following the dismissal of Konstantin Orbelian from the director's position of the National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet named after Alexander Spendiaryan, it is noteworthy that Sarksyan’s name was among the candidates being discussed for the role.

According to him, there has not been a competent approach from the Ministry of Culture regarding this issue. He believes that the acting minister should have sat down at the table with Orbelian and assured him that no one wanted to remove him from his position. “This issue should not have reached the Prime Minister. The ministry should have taken care of all of this,” he added.

The city council member believes that amendments should be made to the law governing this matter, according to which the theater would be led by an artistic director, while the director would simply be a manager dealing with administrative issues.
