The Odyssey of National Film Center's Spaces: What Connection Does Jaghinyan Have?
The National Film Center of Armenia has been renting spaces in various locations since 2006 while effectively possessing only two spaces allocated by the state.
In an interview with "Haykakan Zhamanak," the director of the National Film Center, Shushan Mirzakhanyan, stated that they have been receiving letters from the management of "Hayfilm" demanding either an increase in rent or the vacating of the space. The current legal address of the National Film Center is 3a Teryan Street, which, however, is not suitable for use.
The space requires major renovations, is without electricity, and lacks sewage and water lines, among other issues. Furthermore, the area allocated by the government at 2 Teryan Street was later decided to be handed over to Public Radio for "the realization of the objectives set forth in development programs."
The building was transferred to the Public Radio Corporation purportedly to support its operations and the placement of equipment. However, the higher governing body of the corporation, the board of the Public Television and Radio Company led by Ruben Jaghinyan, obtained the right to independently decide the fate of state property, which they exercised by selling it.
Since 2006, the National Film Center has been renting space in Yerevan and has paid 115 million drams from the state budget, which is far more than the amount that would have been required to construct and relocate the Film Center to the 3a Teryan Street site.
