VIDEO: Recycling Bins to Be Installed in the Capital
As part of the "Recycle it" program for waste sorting and recycling, the number of recycling bins has increased at the main building of the Yerevan Municipality. The aim of the program is to promote the culture of waste sorting and recycling in Armenia through raising awareness.
The Yerevan Municipality joined the initiative led by the "AyESESDi" team at the end of last year.
"In reality, the best way to prevent environmental pollution is to ensure that any type of waste goes to recycling and serves as raw material for secondary use. Four recycling bins have been installed in the administrative building of the Yerevan Municipality, which currently serve only for plastics and paper. In the future, the types of materials will increase, and the deployment will expand," stated Khachik Hakobyan, head of the Environmental Protection Department of the Yerevan Municipality.
The project has been implemented since 2018 through small grant programs funded by UNDP, reaching more than 100,000 beneficiaries. Participants in the "Recycle it" program have the opportunity to sort the following types of waste: plastic bottles, paper, metal, and glass.
“In this short period, more than 130 educational, public, and private organizations have already joined us, and the list continues to grow. There is a high demand, and people want to see that culture in their organizations,” noted Mikael Avetisyan, president of the "AyESESDi" NGO.
The "Innovative Solutions for Community Sustainable Development" NGO is a newly established organization that offers innovative solutions for waste management, environmental protection, and community sustainable development. In addition to the main building of the municipality, similar bins will also be installed in other community-managed structures as well as public places in the capital in the near future.
