Alarm. Small HPPs in Armenia Are on the Brink of Closure

According to the "Zhoghouvrd" newspaper, small hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) in Armenia have found themselves in a financially difficult situation. Most of them are on the brink of closure. This alarming news was shared by the President of the Renewable Energy Producers Association, Roman Meliqyan.

In an interview with the "Zhoghouvrd" daily, he pointed out that the HPPs are unable to produce the planned amounts of electricity, leading them to face financial hardship. The reason for this inability is poor management in the water sector; the HPPs do not receive the legally allotted amount of water and, consequently, cannot produce the necessary electricity. “If the policy does not change and certain stimulus mechanisms are not applied, we will face serious dangers,” he stated.

It should be noted that many small HPPs were built inappropriately, with violations, under previous administrations’ permits, and problems like this were bound to arise over time.
