Taxi Driver Commits Sexual Assault Against 20-Year-Old Girl

The preliminary investigation concerning a case of sexual assault against a 20-year-old resident of Yerevan, initiated by the Investigative Committee of Armenia in the Ajapnyak and Davtashen administrative districts, has been completed.

According to the facts gathered during the preliminary investigation, a 24-year-old man, a resident of Aragatsotn Province and a taxi driver, pursued the 20-year-old girl with the intent to sexually assault her after noticing her leaving a supermarket on December 10, 2018, around 11:45 PM.

In order to execute his intention, he approached the girl from behind in the entrance of one of the buildings around 12:05 AM, covering her mouth with his hand to prevent her from calling for help. The girl lost her balance and fell, at which point the young man assaulted her sexually against her will. However, he fled upon hearing the sound of a door opening from one of the apartments.

During the pre-trial proceedings, videotapes from the supermarket’s surveillance cameras were obtained and inspected. The footage shows the 24-year-old man pursuing the 20-year-old girl.

During the investigation, an identification procedure was conducted, during which the girl recognized the young man.

Based on sufficient evidence, the 24-year-old has been charged under part 1 of Article 139 of the Criminal Code of Armenia. A preventive measure of detention has been applied to him.

The completion of the preliminary investigation has been announced, and the criminal case has been sent to court with an accusatory conclusion.
