One Media Outlet Accurately Quoted, Another Chose to Distort the Message: Lena Nazaryan

“Here is a vivid example of how the meaning of a statement changes with one word modification, and how certain skilled figures twist meanings and thoughts to create misleading assumptions based on that. One media outlet (GalaTV) accurately quoted, while another outlet (News.am) chose to distort the message. This was noted by Lena Nazaryan, a member of the ‘My Step’ faction and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, on her Facebook page.

“And the story is as follows: I stated during the press briefing today that if the CP (Civil Contract) party had nominated candidates in the recent local elections, it would have registered a considerable success. It is probably normal, right, that I believe in my political team's potential success? If we remove the word ‘considerable,’ it suggests that it is not the voter who decides the election outcome, but rather the party is confident that it will win, which, of course, opens the door for different interpretations. Furthermore, I mentioned that the CP has not nominated candidates (all 7 CP candidates were self-nominated), as it does not want to monopolize the political field. Thus, through a difference of one word, the media and certain individuals are attempting to alter the logic of what was said and the impression on the public,” she added.
