Is it Anthem or Baseless Basis? Daniel Yeghoyan
The Honored Artist of Armenia, Daniel Yeghoyan, wrote on his Facebook page: "Edward Mirzoyan considers the song 'Our Fatherland' as the official anthem of Armenia in his memoirs. President Levon Ter-Petrosyan promised that a special commission would be formed, based on whose conclusions the issue would be discussed in the Supreme Council. However, failing to keep his promise, the anthem issue was unexpectedly put on the agenda of the Council session. This is how Mirzoyan describes that 'incident': 'The recording of the Babajanyan-Harutyunyan anthem was listened to and not discussed; there was a deathly silence. But as soon as 'Our Fatherland' started, the entire hall stood up, and witnesses say that the initiator of this was Levon Ter-Petrosyan, who was the first to stand up, setting an example for others' (Edward Mirzoyan, Fragments, Yerevan, 2005, p. 202).
As we can see, the anthem 'Our Fatherland' became our country's anthem at the whim of a few non-specialists; more accurately, it is an 'UNFOUNDED BASIS.' Now, intense discussions are taking place to restore Aram Khachaturian's anthem. This is no longer a matter of taste, purely musical preference, or party politics; it is a LEGAL matter. It would be appropriate to avoid getting stuck in 'mountains and valleys' and restore the violated justice, just as efforts are underway to rid other sectors of the consequences of the arbitrary actions of previous authorities. After all, before this illegality, for many years, the LEGAL ANTHEM of Armenia was Khachaturian's anthem.
Khachaturian's anthem was born during the turbulent days of World War II (1944), when the composer was deeply concerned about the future fate of the Armenian people, and... 'ENDEAVOR TO RISE UP!'—this is how Khachaturian's anthem resonated. Similarly, under the thunderous cannon fire, Shostakovich's 'Leningrad Symphony' was also born, after whose American premiere, the press responded: 'A PEOPLE WITH SUCH MUSIC CANNOT BE DEFEATED.' The same can be said about Aram Khachaturian's anthem. IT IS KHACHATURIAN, AND THAT'S FINAL!"
