Boom in Azerbaijan

Following the order of Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, the country’s prosecutors have instructed the investigative bodies to review the case of Mehman Huseynov, a blogger sentenced to prison for two years on false charges of defaming the police. The investigative body has decided to terminate the new case launched against him.

This was reported today by Azerbaijani media.

Huseynov’s two-year imprisonment will end in the spring, but he has been presented with a new false accusation, supposedly for having assaulted a prison guard. Following public discontent and subsequent protests, the country’s leadership seems to be making concessions in light of President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Davos.

It should be noted that this decision is unprecedented for Azerbaijan, as Aliyev rarely makes such retreats.
