“Mard a vatasel”: Top Expressions of 2018

The outgoing year was vibrant and full of events. The entire course was accompanied by various statements that sparked intense discussions on social media.

1. During the revolution, sometimes more people gathered at Republic Square than the square could accommodate, which often worsened citizens' well-being. Nikol Pashinyan's phrase “mard a vatasel” became a catchphrase, echoing every 5 minutes.

2. After the revolution, the NSS frequently visited certain officials, often raiding their apartments, sometimes doing so ‘as a gift’ and at other times not so much. However, Arakel Movsisyan insisted that their actions were “in accordance with the letter of the law,” and even children were not scared.

3. National Assembly member Gevorg Petrosyan of the Prosperous Armenia faction put forward his theory of human origin. According to Petrosyan, “humanity emerged from Adam and Eve, not from Adam and Paul.”

4. During the Yerevan City Council elections, Naira Zohrabyan expressed doubt about Hayk Marutyan’s manhood and invited him to a debate but without Nikol. “If you are a man, come to the debate, come without Nikol,” she declared.
