Terror, Retribution, Political Persecution: Controversial Statement by the 'Armenia' Alliance

The "Armenia" alliance has addressed the ambassadors and observers accredited in Armenia:

“The pre-election period before the June 7 elections is characterized by an unacceptable level of internal political tension and has clearly transcended the bounds of political struggle. Alongside the public manifestations that unequivocally reject the current regime and are gaining momentum, the regime is attempting to silence political opponents, neutralize citizens' freedom of speech, suppress free expression, deepen the atmosphere of fear, and foster inter-ethnic hostility.

The authoritarian regime's adopted unconstitutional and criminally prosecutable behavior and instruments make electoral freedom and competition impossible. The ruling group has a singular goal: to achieve reproduction through the unacceptable use of force and administrative resources against opposition forces and dissenters.

This goal is served by punitive and unconstitutional actions, which include:

  • Criminal prosecutions and persecutions, institutional repressions.
  • Selective justice, overt abuse of administrative resources.
  • Obvious dependence of the judiciary, preventing legal assessments of unconstitutional actions by the government.
  • Public and explicit punitive directives issued by the head of the ruling group to the prosecution and law enforcement bodies, including instructions to imprison or punish political opponents.
  • Public terror against society, individual citizens, and leaders of opposition parties, with threats of retribution and calls for vengeance.
  • Non-normative vocabulary, targeted harassment, hate speech, deepening of inter-ethnic division and enmity, and the creation of an atmosphere of fear and terror.
  • On May 18, during a live broadcast, Nikol Pashinyan issued unprecedented threats against the three main political opponents as well as ordinary citizens, accompanied by calls for vengeance and non-normative obscenities.

Unfortunately, the double standards of international organizations, biased approaches, and non-targeted behavior further deepen the atmosphere of impunity in Armenia, discredit international institutions, and undermine faith in democracy, seriously questioning the collective West's interest in genuinely democratic governance in Armenia.

We appeal to the embassies accredited in Armenia and international organizations conducting monitoring missions, expecting adequate treatment and assessment. We anticipate an urgent meeting to discuss, present, and evaluate the unconstitutional trajectory adopted by the authorities in greater detail.
