American Soldiers Prepare for New Operation
The United States aims to make changes to the existing military agreement to allow American armed forces to remain indefinitely in Greenland. As reported by The Washington Post, Washington seeks this move even in scenarios where the island may declare its independence from the Kingdom of Denmark in the future.
In addition to a permanent military presence, the American side wants to gain a veto power over major foreign investment projects taking place in Greenland. Through this mechanism, the White House intends to limit the expansion of its geopolitical rivals' economic and strategic influence in the Arctic region.
The new conditions and requirements proposed by the U.S. have already sparked discontent both in Copenhagen and among local authorities in Greenland. There are concerns that control over investments and a military indefinite presence could limit the island's sovereignty and economic independence.
