Political Figure Assassinated Ahead of Elections
A former mayor who supported presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella has been assassinated in the central part of Colombia, according to CBS News, citing local authorities. One of his assistants was also killed.
Rafaela Cortes, the governor of the department, stated that the identities of the assailants are currently unknown, and law enforcement agencies are conducting an investigation.
Following the incident, presidential candidate de la Espriella described the attack on social media as 'narcoterrorism,' calling the slain colleagues patriots who died as a result of their political activities.
Recent sociological surveys indicate that the right-wing candidate de la Espriella is solidifying his position in competition with another right-wing figure, Senator Paloma Valencia. However, the current frontrunner in the election campaign is left-wing Senator Ivan Cepeda.
