I Don't Think About the Financial Situation of Americans: Trump's Controversial Statement

U.S. President Donald Trump's diplomatic efforts, backed by China's mediation to end the war with Iran, have yielded no tangible results. White House officials had high hopes for his visit to Beijing, considering China's close ties with Tehran, but Trump returned to Washington empty-handed.

On his return flight, Trump told reporters that Chinese leader Xi Jinping has expressed a desire to see the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and agreed that Iran should not have nuclear weapons. However, these are merely a reiteration of Beijing’s previous statements.

“He would like to see an end to this. He would like to help. If he wants to help, that’s great. But we don’t need help,” Trump stated in an interview with Fox News.

Pentagon officials insist on adopting a more aggressive approach, including targeted military strikes to compel Iran to make concessions. On the other hand, Trump himself has leaned towards diplomacy in recent weeks, hoping that sanctions and direct negotiations would pressure Tehran into signing a new agreement. However, Iran has not changed its hardline stance following the April ceasefire. Moreover, Trump has already posted on his Truth Social page that the military campaign against Iran will continue (to be continued!).

U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vence has attempted to remain optimistic, noting that he is in constant touch with partners in the Arab world and Trump's special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.

The economic repercussions of the war have begun to seriously impact the wallets of Americans. Due to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, the average gasoline price in the U.S. has exceeded $4.50 per gallon and continues to rise.

Despite domestic discontent, Donald Trump continues to justify his policies and ignore the economic risks. When asked by reporters how much the social situation of the people motivates him to sign a peace agreement, the president gave a controversial response: “I don’t think about the financial situation of Americans. I don’t think about anyone. I only think about one thing: we cannot allow Iran to have nuclear weapons. That is the only thing that motivates me,” Trump remarked.

Nonetheless, the White House team realizes that time is running out, as the U.S. Congress is approaching midterm elections. If Trump's administration fails to “in some way” reopen the Strait of Hormuz and stabilize the fuel market, the Republican Party could face a heavy defeat.
