One of the Bear Cub Found in Jermuk Has Died
One of the bear cubs found in Jermuk on May 4 and transferred to the Wildlife and Cultural Value Preservation Foundation's shelter has died. The foundation informed Armenpress, adding that the other cub is currently under the supervision of specialists.
It was noted that the condition of the second cub is variable, and every hour could be critical. “It is unknown how long the cubs were without their mother, food, and water, and in what environment. In the wild, even a few hours without warmth and milk can start irreversible processes in a cub's organism. When an animal does not receive food for an extended period, its internal organs begin to function by consuming their own resources. They derive all the necessary liquid for their organism exclusively from maternal milk. Being separated from the mother means not only hunger but also severe dehydration, which is critical at such a young age,” stated the foundation.
On May 4, around 13:00, the Chief Department of Community Police of the Ministry of Internal Affairs received a report from the Jermuk division stating that two bear cubs had been found on a raised section of the road embankment in Jermuk, Vayots Dzor province.
Thanks to the immediate response of the Environmental Ministry and the staff of the inspection body, it was determined at the scene that the helpless wild animals were approximately one-month-old cubs of the brown bear, listed in the Red Book of Armenia. External examination revealed no injuries on the wild animals. To ensure proper care for the cubs and eventually return them to the wild, the animals were transferred to the FPWC’s Caucasian Biodiversity Shelter in Uritsar.
