Trump Does Not Mention USSR in His Victory Day Speech
US President Donald Trump has signed a proclamation marking the anniversary of Nazi Germany's defeat, highlighting the role of the United States and its allies without specifically mentioning the contribution of the USSR.
The document states, “We commemorate America’s glorious victory over tyranny and evil in Europe, achieved by the power of our armed forces and those of our allies.” The US leader also emphasized that the country remains committed to that legacy by maintaining the supremacy of its armed forces for the defense of state sovereignty and to confront any threats.
In the United States and several other Western countries, the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II is celebrated on May 8 as Victory Day in Europe. In Russia and the CIS countries, the celebration of the Great Patriotic War Victory Day is observed on May 9, due to the time difference.
