Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had his first phone conversation this year with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Ahead of Victory Day, Russia and the US have intensified their diplomatic phone communications. The conversation between Lavrov and Rubio, held on the evening of May 5, followed a discussion between Presidents Putin and Trump, which was also initiated by the Moscow side.

“This increase in bilateral communications is occurring against the backdrop of a sharp escalation of the Ukrainian crisis. One of the possible developments in the situation could be Russian strikes targeted at Kyiv’s center. In the current circumstances, Moscow considers it a priority to inform Washington about the potential dangers of further escalation of the situation.
