Human Rights Defender Releases Statement Regarding Incident Involving Children in Vedi

In recent days, various publications have circulated in the media and social platforms regarding an incident involving children in the city of Vedi. In response, the Human Rights Defender has issued a statement.

“The Human Rights Defender considers the information related to the incident to be extremely concerning and reiterates that any manifestation of violence against a child is absolutely unacceptable and subject to appropriate legal assessment. The circumstances of this case require a comprehensive and objective investigation, and in this regard, appropriate public communication is also necessary.

At the same time, the Defender emphasizes that in such sensitive situations, the publication of identifying information regarding the child, including about the school, health status, or developmental characteristics, and the dissemination of any information that could create direct or indirect identification opportunities, does not serve the best interests of the child and may harm the child.

Especially in the context of incidents of violence, publications regarding the child should be made in such a way that the child does not find themselves in a more defenseless and vulnerable situation.

The Defender stresses that the coverage of materials concerning children must be carried out in accordance with the principle of ‘do no harm’, adhering to the rules of responsible journalism, ensuring the full protection of the child's personal data, and placing special importance on demonstrating vigilance and sensitivity in the preparation of publications. In this regard, an assessment is being conducted within the framework of the Human Rights Defender’s mandate,” the statement reads.
