Drug Trafficking and Serious Crimes Have Increased, Says ‘Jamanak’ Daily
‘Jamanak’ daily reports: “The agenda of today’s National Assembly session includes the annual report on the activities of the Prosecutor General's Office of Armenia and the Investigative Committee. The report on the activities of the Prosecutor General's Office will be discussed; overall crime has decreased, however, a number of serious and public concern crimes have registered a significant increase.
According to the report, in 2025, there were 40,722 registered crimes in Armenia, which is a decrease of 3.2 percent compared to the previous year. A decrease has also been recorded in cases of hooliganism; if last year there were 877 cases, this year the number is 777.
However, in the context of the overall decrease, it is particularly concerning that there has been a sharp rise in the illegal trafficking of drugs. The number of such cases has reached 4,595, which is an increase of 685 cases, or 19.7 percent over the year. The situation is more pronounced in Yerevan, where 2,467 cases have been registered, marking a 38.1 percent increase. The number of crimes committed for the purpose of drug trafficking has also increased. Such cases have reached 2,426, with 1,536 of these registered in the capital city. In Yerevan alone, this figure has increased by 30.5 percent.
The Prosecutor's Office reports that the volume of seized drugs has also increased. Seizures of natural-origin substances have increased by about 43 percent, while the quantities of synthetic drugs have increased more than fivefold. These data indicate not only an expansion of trafficking but also structural changes in the market.
A concerning rise has also been noted in crimes against a person's life. The number of attempted murders has reached 78, representing a 21.9 percent increase compared to the previous year. There is an even sharper increase in attempted murders; if only 2 cases were registered in the previous reporting period, that number has now risen to 12. At the same time, the report indicates that law enforcement agencies have successfully prevented 10 such crimes still in the preparation stage, indicating a certain effectiveness of preventive efforts.
Crimes committed using firearms have also increased. If last year there were 116 recorded cases, this year that number has reached 140. Thus, the picture presented by the Prosecutor's Office does not allow for an unequivocal assessment. On one hand, the overall crime rate has somewhat decreased, while on the other hand, there has been an increase, particularly in those types of crimes that directly relate to public safety and the protection of citizens' lives. The expansion of drug trafficking and the rise in severe crimes indicate that serious changes are taking place in the structure of crime, which may soon become a key topic of parliamentary discussions,” the daily writes.
