UAE Decides to Leave OPEC

The United Arab Emirates has announced its decision to withdraw from OPEC, effective May 1 of this year. According to a statement issued by the country’s official WAM news agency, this move is motivated by national interests, as well as commitments made to investors and partners.

Authorities in the UAE have indicated that it is time to focus on the strategic vision for developing their own energy sector. This decision comes against the backdrop of rising tensions in the global energy market and a crisis resulting from Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

The UAE clarified that leaving the organization will allow for more flexible responses to changing market demands and will actively contribute to the stability of energy supply, particularly given the geopolitical instability in the Arabian Gulf.

Despite ceasing its membership, the Emirates reaffirmed their commitment to global market stability and readiness to continue collaboration with both producers and consumers. The statement emphasized that the country has made significant investments in OPEC's activities for many years, but the current situation requires new approaches to manage the energy future more effectively.
