Tensions Rise: Iran's Ministry of Defense Releases Statement

The Iranian Deputy Defense Minister Reza Talainik announced new approaches for navigating the Strait of Hormuz during a meeting in Bishkek. At the meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states’ defense ministers, Talainik presented new regulations regarding the passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Tehran's official position, transit through the strait after the conflict will occur only based on norms and security protocols established by Iran. The new rules will primarily apply to commercial vessels, which will be required to follow procedures that ensure Iran’s national security.

It is noted that Iran had previously expressed its intention to establish a new navigation regime with Oman. Additionally, the Iranian side plans to charge fees for operating the strait, and for this purpose, the Central Bank of Iran has already opened relevant accounts in various currencies.

The regional situation escalated in late February when the U.S. and Israel struck targets within Iran. Despite a two-week ceasefire established on April 8 and negotiations in Islamabad, no final agreement has been reached between the parties. Currently, the U.S. is maintaining a blockade on Iranian ports, to which Tehran has responded by restoring military control over the Strait of Hormuz.
