22 Monks Arrested for Transporting Over 110 kg of Drugs
Sri Lankan law enforcement has arrested 22 monks at Bandaranaike International Airport on suspicion of transporting a large consignment of narcotics. By court order, the suspects will spend seven days in custody for questioning and necessary investigative actions.
It has been revealed that the value of the confiscated consignment reaches hundreds of millions of dollars on the black market. Based on operational data, a search of the monks' luggage uncovered prohibited substances, with each bag containing approximately 5 kg of drugs.
Most of the arrested individuals are students under 30 years old from higher spiritual institutions. The monks claimed they were only transporting sweets and educational materials for a charitable program for schoolchildren.
